New England Warming More Rapidly Than Most Places on Earth, Analysis Shows.
The American area known for its colonial history, sweet syrup and bitterly cold, snow-bound winters is undergoing a dramatic transformation. Fresh analysis shows that New England is heating up faster than nearly any other place on the globe.
Unprecedented Pace of Transformation
The velocity of temperature increase in New England makes it the fastest-heating area of the continental United States, according to the study. The rate of its warming has reportedly increased significantly in the last half-decade.
"The temperature is not only rising, it's speeding up," said a lead researcher on the project. "It's really sped up in recent years, which surprised me. Our climate is shifting in a new direction, after being largely consistent for thousands of years."
The research places the New England region among the most rapidly heating areas in the world, together with the polar region and parts of Europe and China. "The region is now moving toward being like the south-eastern US," the researcher noted.
Study Approach and Findings
For the analysis, researchers analyzed multiple data sources on day and night temperatures and snow cover dating back to 1900. The analysis encompassed the six states of Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Connecticut.
They discovered that New England has warmed by an average of 2.5°C (4.5°F) from 1900 to 2024. This far exceeds the worldwide mean, with the planet warming by around 1.3 degrees Celsius in the comparable timeframe.
"That is very fast heating, which is worrying," said the researcher.
Key Climate Trends
- Nighttime temperatures are rising faster than maximum temperatures.
- Winters are warming at twice the rate of other seasons.
- The severe cold New England is known for is being diminished.
Oceanic Factors and the "Heat Battery"
A major cause for this unusual accumulation of heat may be changes in the Atlantic Ocean. The world's oceans are taking in more than 90% of the excess heat captured by greenhouse gases.
In the north Atlantic, an influx of cold, fresh water from Greenland’s melting glaciers is slowing down the Gulf Stream. This is directing warmer water into the coastal waters, congregating heat along the shoreline that is then carried inland by wind patterns.
"The excess heat from global warming is being stored in the oceans like a huge storage unit," said the researcher. "This is now being released into the atmosphere and New England is a receiver of that energy."
Impacts on Culture and Weather
Once considered a relatively stable region, New England has suffered extreme climate events in recent years, including enormous flooding and extended drought.
The rising heat endangers iconic aspects of local culture:
- Syrup production is facing challenges by shifting seasonal patterns.
- Winter sports are impacted; an ice hockey tournament on Vermont and New Hampshire lakes has been called off or relocated repeatedly due to a lack of ice.
- Winter tourism have faced difficulties because of inadequate snowfall.
"I live just north of Boston and when I arrived in the 1990s I used to ice skate on the ponds regularly," recalled the researcher. "That sort of thing has pretty much vanished from much of the southern part of the region."
